โ€œShe woke up every morning feeling very young, yet at the same time terribly old. Some days she felt as though she were still a child, other days as thought se had felt far too much of the world for one life. That she had been burdened with duty ever since she was a child. That she had never really lived. She felt empty; she felt full. She needed people; she needed to be alone. She couldn't get the equation right? Who was to blame? She thought it was herself. She thought it was her mother, and her mother's mother, and the mothers of all their mothers, all the way back in time.โ€

A Woman Is No Man
Follows three generations of Palestinian women:
an 18yo girl who gets married and moves from Palestine to New York in 1990, and struggles with her new husband and the pressure to have sons (but only having daughters)
and her oldest daughter at the same age in 2008, pressured to get married even though she wants to go to university, and discovering thereโ€™s more about her parents deathโ€™s than what she was told.
as well as moments from their mother in law / grandmother, whoโ€™s been through trauma of her own
abuse and generational trauma

I highly highly HIGHLY recommend reading A Woman Is No Man and Evil Eye (both by Etaf Rum). Etaf Rum is a Palestinian American author who explores the Palestinian American experience (particularly that of women) in her books. Both of these books look at inter generational trauma in such a beautifully nuanced way. If you have inter generational trauma, you need to read these books. I cannot say enough good things about her work. Everyone should read both of them.

A Woman is No Man by Etaf Rum (draft)
This was a heavy & impactful read for me. I have so many emotions when I think about this story. It was beautifully written and easy to read. I honestly wish I was better at articulating this book.
This story follows three generations of Arabic women. It starts out with Isra who is married off to a man named Adam in America. Isra makes the move to America from Palestine. She has such high hopes for her marriage to Adam only to find out that her docile nature and people pleasing does not get her anywhere. She fears for her four daughters' futures as she is stuck in an abusive relationship to a man. Every character in this book is bound to the culture and community expectations. Isra's oldest daughter, Deya is then introduced into the book. She is very confused on where her life will end up as she is stuck between the world of American culture and the Arabic culture that she lives in at home. She begins to unlock the real truths of her mother's past through her Grandmother Fareeda after she begins to speak up and use her voice after getting inspiration from an unlikely source. This book highlights the issues with living in a patriarchy while being a woman, especially an Arabic woman living in the United States. This book is so important. There is so much left to say about the book, but I don't want to add any spoilers. I still no next to nothing about any culture other than my own so this was very insightful.

I've been seeing a disturbing number of "queer safe spaces" describe themselves as things like "femme & them" and even worse "she+," conflating femininity & nonbinaryhood. cease this immediately. say it with me: nonbinary people are NOT women-lite and it is extremely violent and straight up incorrect to imply that all they/thems are fem adjacent. this is erasure and this verbiage does nothing but make gnc and nonbinary spaces unsafe for masc and male nonbinary people. nonbinary, genderqueer and other third gender people can be and are masculine and men, we can be hes as well as shes and theys, stop allowing yourself and your peers to view nonbinary as woman/femme-lite, signed a butch nonbinary person.
